Yuri Egin (ユリ・エギン Yuri Egin) was a Lower Second Class Exorcist, as well as one of Shiro Fujimoto's close friends. She became pregnant by Satan about sixteen years before the beginning of the series, giving birth to Rin and Yukio Okumura.

Appearance

Yuri's appearance in the anime

Yuri was a young woman of slender figure and petite appearance. She had pale skin, a round face with few moles, big intense blue eyes (teal in the anime), and long wavy dark brown hair. Yuri had bore a striking resemblance to her youngest son Yukio, though she had Rin's eyes.

Her normal attire consisted of a black coat, a pink scarf, and a dark blue skirt. On casual days, Yuri was usually seen wearing a simple white sundress.

Early in the manga (when she was a young girl), Yuri wore a thick jacket, scarf, skirt, fingerless gloves, and a shoulder bag. After being taken into Asylum, she wore the uniform. After becoming an exorcist, she wore an exorcist jacket.

Personality

In the anime, Yuri was somewhat similar to Rin, as she rebelled against her father's wishes and sometimes showed a slightly aggressive side when angry. Also, Yuri was known for her great bravery, not even being afraid from Satan's attacks and instead feeling sorry for him.

Despite being an Exorcist, Yuri was open to other creatures like Demons, such as Snowmen and Goblins, noticing their differences but respected them as she thought all things/beings complement each other. She also believed most Demons enter Assiah because they were curious, rather than to deliberately cause damage.

In the manga, Shura also notes Yuri to being empathetic, "bright and kind", understanding others' desires and wanting them to realize them when possible. Furthermore, Yuri seems to enjoy teasing Shiro.

History

Yuri was born from Ernst Frederik Egin, a half-German high-ranked exorcist who raised her to follow his footsteps. However, she was more open-minded about other creatures than him, often having discussions with him for this. Their separation further grew when Yuri went to live in a forest, thus gaining the nickname of "Witch of the Forest".

While on a mission to investigate spontaneous human combustion, Yuri and her fellow Exorcists were attacked by Satan's blue flames. Burning all of her companions except her, Yuri was mysteriously unaffected, eventually finding Satan possessing a wolf and pitied him for he could never enter Assiah because his vessels would reduce to ashes.

Yuri allowed Satan to possess her and taught him about several things, including life and death. This caused them to eventually becoming quite close, to the point of being impregnated by him. When Shiro was shooting her Demon friends to convince her to come home, Yuri let out blue flames, revealing Satan and her pregnancy with their children.

When Ernst got entered shortly before she gave birth, Yuri was put into court at the Vatican, sentencing to death as a witch. Before she could be burned alive, Satan saved her by using her father as his vessel and commanded her to run. Mephisto freed Shiro from prison and they encountered a hospitalized Ernst, who ordered them to find and kill Yuri along with Satan's spawns. The two went into the forest, only to find Yuri with her newborn children, whom she named Rin and Yukio. She soon died of childbirth after tenderly saying her wish to they grow strong and understanding. Using Kurikara, Shiro was about to slay them until he saw Rin smile at him. Remembering what Yuri said to him before, he decided to raise her children as his own, much to Mephisto's amusement. Then, Mephisto seals Rin's powers inside Kurikara, and challenged Shiro to a bet.

About 40 years before the story begins, Yuri grew up on the streets of the northernmost part of True Cross Academy's town. A dangerous slum where homeless and criminals lived, raised by an elderly homeless couple of ex-exorcists, Oku and Obaba. Yuri grew up with a basic understanding of spirits and demons, and frequently played with a small spirit, Rinka.

After factory fire killed Oku and Obaba, Yuri was left alone and scavenging for scraps in an already harsh winter. She discovered Shiro Fujimoto's bunker that he was using as a rest stop for his escape from the academy. Upon discovering the child in his bed, Shiro had zero sympathy for the girl's plight and wanted her gone. Yuri held his porn magazines hostage so Shiro allowed her to stay. The academy eventually found and apprehended Shiro. When Yuri displayed the ability to perceive the Black Dogs, she was taken to the Asylum, enrolled as an Exwire, and separated from Shiro for a number of years.

While in Asylum, Yuri was trained as an Exorcist with a number of other wards taken in by the order. Five years later, on Yuri's first mission with her class against an Ent, Yuri met Shiro again, glad to see the boy who saved her life was safe and doing well. She greeted him like an old friend only for him to brush her off and referring to her simply as a "brat". Fujimoto took down the Ent on his own. While Yuri cautioned him for fighting so recklessly despite his strength, she was shaken at his callous extermination of the Greenmen who had gathered around her fleeing the damaged caused by exterminating the Ent. Yuri decided to specialize as a Tamer.

29 years before the story, in Mexico, relics were raging out of control and resisting any pacification. The True Cross Order and the Mexican government were at a stalemate at how to proceed: destroy the relics and lose thousands of years of culture, or preserve them and risk human lives. Yuri, being the best expert on Golems was called into the field where Shiro was already stationed. Despite doubts that these attacks really were Golems running amok, she bravely subdued the creature and revealed that someone had rather crudely, turned the statue into a Golem. Yuri stood there and listened to Shiro criticize her as a hypocrite for being an exorcist who likes demons. When Shiro abused her friend Rick, Yuri lost her composure and slapped Shiro, which eventually dissolved into a childish fight of hair pulling, name calling and more slaps in front of a number of their superiors. When Fujimoto went to finish their fight, Rinka made its presence known to Yuri.

The next day, Fujimoto went to visit Yuri and revealed some of his dark upbringing under the effect of Asylum. He played up like these experiences are what made him the toughest man alive but was brought short when he actually looked at Yuri and only saw pity. Yuri then confessed her love for Shiro. After a tender kiss, she revealed that she is 16 years old, so Shiro promptly rejected her. Having watched the exchange from nearby, Rinka comforted Yuri in her heartbreak. At the same time, one of the bodies being made as a vessel for Lucifer awakened. 

Despite an awkward run in the next day, Fujimoto relents and tells Yuri that they can at least be friends. Its through Yuri and her friends that Fujimoto began to let go of his more self destructive habits over a course of 9 years until Yuri was encountered with a possessed body from Asylum, mistaking it for Fujimoto only to eventually learn that it's her childhood friend taken form; Rinka. Although their reunion was cut short when Section 13 came to take him out, they took Yuri with them, curious as to why a body possessed by a demon lord would go straight to her. Rinka's first words are "Yuri" and he swiftly caves in a wall or two to get to her in her interrogation room, killing people left and right, the only one who can calm him down is Yuri.

Yuri had no idea her childhood wisp was capable of possessing someone, let alone killing others but quickly learns that Rinka's mental state is more that of a baby, not understanding that what they are doing is actually killing them. Ignoring Fujimoto's warnings about both Section 13 and getting involved with demons, she continues to watch over Rinka. Meanwhile Rick calls Fujimoto out on clearly liking Yuri and ominously tells him to stop waiting too long otherwise someone else will come along, cue Rinka.

Despite some fears on Fujimoto's side about the nature of her and Rinka's relationship, it's clear at the beginning it's more of a mother and child, Yuri having to teach Rinka how to eat , clean himself after a failed attempt at eating and even talk with flash cards, despite this, his intelligence grows at a rate which Yuri struggles to keep up with and within months he's mentally overtaken her. Regardless, Rinka still shows his demonic side, goring holes in pets given to him out of curiosity and boredom and destructive temper tantrums whenever she has to leave his room. Only being calmed down with childish praises of "how cool" Yuri would think of him if he could manage staying in his room alone like a big boy. Yuri fears his treatment of his pets as a sign of what he could do when under stimulated--something that's growing harder to avoid as his intelligence grows--and suggests introducing a new person to Rinka, despite Section 13's misgivings, Fujimoto volunteers with interesting results. All it takes if for Rinka to see Fujimoto before showing a childish bout of jealousy, running up to Yuri and warning him to stay away from Yuri, when she prompts Rinka for what's wrong he can't explain why he hates, Fujimoto, but simply does. Fujimoto humors Rinka, by playing with his toys and starting a game of tiddlywinks with a bucket, but lacks the coordination to match Fujimoto's skill with the plastic frogs and promptly throws a tantrum, declaring to Yuri that he hates to lose and and wants to beat him (Fujimoto). Yuri calls Fujimoto out on being equally as childish ad Rinka by egging him on but thier friendly teasing and goodbye's with each other stirs a new wave of jealousy in Rinka. This is made worse later when overhearing other exorcists note how cute Yuri is and wonder if she's dating Fujimoto, taking his guards hostage for as much information as possible he absorbed everything the books which the order had to offer. When Yuri tries to negotiate for the hostages freedom Rinka reveals that's not his name and kills his hostage, revealing that from what he's learned from all the books is that he is really and truly Satan.

Expecting his callous murder and proclamations to be Satan himself to impress Yuri, Satan is taken off guard when he see's she's horrified at what he's done. Blaming herself for not being a better mentor towards him about the value of life, Satan simply shrugs it off as human morality meaning nothing to him and becomes enraged when Yuri tries to call him Rinka instead of Satan. The demon breaks out of True Cross' city and disappears for a while.

6 months later (around the time Fujimoto meets Shura) Fujimoto tries to leave Shura with Yuri for fear that the only other option being Asylum, Yuri admits she can't take on any responsibilities like this as she's still waiting for Rinka, knowing that when his hosts body begins to decompose that he'll come back and plans to save him. Once again Rick, whose tired of these years of yearning, calls Yuri out on both not pursuing a relationship with Fujimoto but insisting on staying by his side when she clearly loves him, Yuri confesses that as far as she knows, she's just being annoying but fears what would happen should she leave Fujimoto alone.

Like Yuri predicted, Satan returns to Sector 13 looking for a cure to the state of his body, his demonic entourage having no problem overtaking Asylum. Reflecting on his parting words with Yuri in his dying moments and demands to see her. Despite this and Satan taking numerous hostages, The Order refuses to sent Yuri in, even at her own insistence, valuing her more as a consultant on Satan than only one who could control him. The exorcists are simply waiting for Satan's body to give out on him, so Yuri decides to break into the secret base, Fujimoto catches her in the act and see's her off, joking that he could at least be honest with her at the end Fujimoto grabs Yuri--either to confess his feelings or talk her out of what very well could be suicide, instead finds himself distracting oncoming exorcists for Yuri to break into Section 13. Both are visibly shaken from what could have been, Yuri presses onward towards Satan. 

Yuri makes the demands for the hostages safety and offers to run away with Satan, who laughs at her for thinking so highly of herself but soon reveals that he does not truly believe that she would actually run away with him and sets his demons on her. While Yuri fights valiantly against Satan's minions, she's more than outnumbered. When she's nearly fatally wounded Satan panics and kills the other demons to save her, deciding that Yuri belongs to him.

Satan abandons his attempts at prolonging his life and simply wants to spend what time he has with Yuri in peace, and it's during this period of time that Yuri begins to learn that Satan's affection for her has developed into something more than a mother complex and desires her as a woman. When they finally leave Section 13, the exorcists are ready and waiting with thanks to the members of Section 13 whose progress in the Elixir of life had seen a renaissance with thanks to Satan's help and feared his leaving. During the attack, Satan was subdued and it's revealed that Yuri is pregnant. Unable to actually harm her while carrying Satan's children, Yuri fears what will happen to them when they are born as Section 13, pretending that Satan had died from his body breaking down, paints her as a traitor how brought Satan into The Order.

It's at this point that Fujimoto goes to retrieve Kurikara with the intent of killing Satan's kids as Yuri's health rapidly declines. Her delivery was a nightmare, already a month past her due date and due to the exorcists fear of what damage her cradle barrier would do if they interfered too much such as administer pain killers, Yuri had to deliver her twins on her own in a dungeon surrounded by numerous exorcists primed and ready to kill her children when they arrive. 18 hours into labor and Yuri had still to begin actually giving birth and because of her dwindling health, there was a belief that Yuri might die before delivering the twins. Finally, out shot Rin Okumura, literally. In a jet of blue flame sprung an infant with the ability to walk, leap and massacre the exorcists that threatened him and his family. The cradle barrier was dispelled with Rin's birth and Yuri's life sapping away, midwives were preparing for C-section, but Fujimoto urges her to push if she wants to live. Ultimately she succeeds to deliver Yukio Okumura on her own.

Her name was mentioned during Rin's trial, being the first time Yuri was directly mentioned.

Anime-Exclusive arc

In the anime, her father Ernst tells Yukio that she was burned alive after she was accused of being a witch, without a fair trial, by the Vatican, who claimed it would bring peace. Later, Yukio learnt from Satan that it was Ernst himself who ordered Yuri's execution. It was revealed that Yuri wishes for a world where Assiah and Gehenna don't exist so that humans and Demons can live peacefully.^{[citation needed]}

Yuri's grave

Satan attempted to fulfill her wish by engulfing Assiah with the Gehenna Gate. However, Rin and Yukio were able to destroy the Gate and stop Satan. Satan then apologized to the deceased Yuri but she told him it wasn't time yet and that their sons will choose their own path.

A month after the incident, Mephisto gave the brothers a key to lead them to the forest where they were born and where Yuri died. The Snowmen accompanied them to her grave, which was possibly made for her by Shiro.

Blue Night Investigation arc

Shura Kirigakure tells the Okumura twins about having met their mother when she was younger. This happened when Shiro Fujimoto asked get Yuri, who was making pottery, to help him and the young Shura. Though Shiro later attemped to make her adopt Shura, Yuri refused because she could tell that Shura wanted to stay with him.

Powers & Abilities

Yuri was shown to be a exceptional Tamer, a certified trainer and breeder of demons and wrote several textbooks by the time she was twenty-five. She was shown to be able to correctly identify a demon despite higher ranking exorcists failing to do so.

She was notably hesitant to combat demons, being quite fond of them, leading to her only gaining a Lower Second Class certification during her exorcist exam.

Flame Immunity (Anime only): Yuri was shown to be immune to Satan's flames, as she wasn't incinerated or even covered by his blue flames even when he possessed her body. 

Cradle Barrier: As shown in chapter 108, Yuri was in the state of Cradle Barrier while she was pregnant. If someone was to harm Yuri or her unborn children, they would be inflicted with a curse

• Although commonly a male name in other languages, "Yuri" (written as 百合, ゆり, or ユリ) is a common female name meaning "Lily" in Japan. • Despite appearing in the anime much before appearing in the manga, both of Yuri's appearances match. This could mean her anime design was made by the series' creator Kazue Katō (either especially for the anime or so that she looked the same in the manga) or that she simply decided to make the anime design official.
• Her ability immunity to Satan's blue flames in the anime contradicts what Satan said about her in the beginning of the series, as he claims his flames destroyed the body of Rin's mother.
