The Kyoto Impure King arc (京都不浄王篇 Kyoto Fujō Ō-hen) is the third arc of the Blue Exorcist series.

An incident at the True Cross Order's Saishinbu lead the Exwires and others to be dispatched to the Kyoto Branch Office in order to stop the return of the deadly Impure King.

Summary[]

Theft of the Left Eye[]

Rin, Yukio and Shura are called to investigate an incident in the low income housing section of the True Cross Campus Town. Meeting up with the director of the Saishinbu, Saburota Todo, he explains that a dangerous artifact known as the Left Eye of the Impure King has been stolen.[1] He describes his team's encounter with a mysterious individual who kidnapped a young boy before unleashing the miasma of the Left Eye and escaping.[2]

Tracking down the masked individual, Todo explains that the eye belonged to a demon known as the Impure King, which had been subdued nearly one hundred forty years ago, but whose eyes continued to exude miasma.[3] Confronting the masked man, he vanishes, leaving behind fake Left Eye. Todo suddenly attacks Yukio, revealing himself to possessed by a demon.[4] Fighting the Okumura brothers, Todo buys time for his accomplice before retreating, leaving Yukio and Rin to help the kidnapped boy.[5]

Being confronted by Mephisto outside, he states that the true Left Eye has been stolen and that a elite team will be organised to retrieve it.[6] Heading back to the Cram School, Mephisto informs the Exwires that they will be participating in a mission to Kyoto.[7]

Heading to Kyoto[]

The expedition begins with the reinforcement squad boarding the Shinkansen train to Kyoto.[8] Onboard, Rin is faced with the others avoiding him due to his heritage,[9] with the exception of Izumo.[10]

Once underway, Shura explains the situation to the squad, also mentioning that at the time the Left Eye was stolen from the Saishinbu, the Shinbu at the Kyoto branch also came under attack.[11] After recounting the history of the Impure King and their responsibility to avoid the Right Eye suffering the same fate as the Left, the journey continues.

Izumo explains to Rin that many exorcists are actually descended from demons and that it'smerely Rin's relation to Satan in particular that is making people wary.[12] Ryuji argues with her, and the Exwires are sent to another car as punishment.[13] The argument between the group intensifies, but before it can come to a head, one of the Bariyon being used for their punishment attacks.[14] Failing to destroy it, it hurls itself at Ryuji, but Shura intervenes before any harm can be done. She tells them that if they continue to hamper each other even against a weak opponent like that, they'll die in real combat.[15]

Arriving at Kyoto, they are brought to the Toraya Ryokan where all the employees welcome Ryuji home.[16]

Reinforcing Kyoto[]

As soon as the group arrives the Exwires, excluding Ryuji, Konekomaru and Renzo, are told to help with treating those infected with the Impure King's Miasma.[17] Being passed over for jobs by several of the exorcists working, Rin becomes frustrated until an unusual man flags him down to help cut watermelons for the sick.[18] The man introduces himself as Ryuji's father, Tatsuma Suguro.[19] Parting ways with Tatsuma, Rin returns to the patients, only to find a fight breaking out amongst two of the Shima brothers and the three Hojo sisters.[20]

Meanwhile, Shura and her party are shown around the Shinbu by Ryuunosuke Doi, who explains to them that the Kyoto branch is almost half made up of exorcists from the Myōō Dharani sect which fell into ruin after the Blue Night, and that the case involving the Eyes of the Impure King is likely linked to them.[21]

Back at the Ryokan, the fight between the Shima and the Hojo comes to a head, with Juzo and Mamushi attacking one another. However, before either side can injure the other, Ryuji steps in to quell the violence.[22] He tells them that now is not the time to be fighting, but while they agree, Mamushi states that such an order would have to come from the head of the Myōō Dharani, Ryuji's father, to mean anything.[23]
