The Devil Resides in Human Souls (悪魔は人の心に棲む Akuma wa Hito no Kokoro ni Sumu) is the 1st episode of the Ao no Exorcist anime overall and of the first season. It first aired on April 17, 2011.
Synopsis
The priests that are possessed
The story begins with a group of priests praying and one by one each of the priest are being burned by blue flames. One of the priests tells the others to fall back, but the high priest yells to the other priest not to fall back and who would protect Assiah. But the priest becomes possessed and screams out Demon before cutting to the night sky turning blue.
Rin doing his job
In the morning, a teenager named Rin Okumura was almost hit by a crossbow arrow and, after being provoked, he punches a guy in the face for hurting pigeons. The group of punks call him a Demon and take off. When he returned home, he was lectured by Shiro Fujimoto, a priest and their father, because he lost his job and he got into a fight again. Shiro then asks Rin's brother, Yukio Okumura, to tend to his injuries. His brother got accepted in True Cross Academy, a well-known and prestigious boarding school, so he was packing his things in preparation for moving. The next day, after being encouraged by the other priests in the church, Rin decided to try applying for a job in a supermarket. He was interviewed and the manager, Ms. Momoi, gave him various tasks that are hard for most people. Rin is apparently fast and strong, so he was able to complete most tasks, but because of his clumsiness, it always turned out wrong. When the manager was thinking of firing him, Rin started cooking on one of the promo stands, being a natural at cooking, and the manager decided to let him keep the job.
Rin chases after the creature
Later that day, after Rin called Yukio about the news, he saw the girl that Father Fujimoto was talking to the day before. The girl was running after her scarf so Rin decided to help her and grabs it and, to his surprise, it wasn't being blown by the wind, instead it was being pulled by some monkey-like creature. The creature ran away through the store with Rin following it while accidentally knocking the stores merchandise, causing him to get fired.
Reiji, possessed, tries to burn Rin
When he arrived at home, he was instructed by Shiro not to go outside the church. The following day, the group of punks that he encountered before provoked him to go out. He followed them and the group leader named Reiji Shiratori, tried to bribe him and mocked his brother which made Rin angry. Being outnumbered, the group pinned him down and tried to burn him.
Reiji, possessed, tells Rin that he is Satan's son
In response, Rin suddenly lets out blue flames, which scared the other teens, leaving Reiji behind. He was then told that he is the son of Satan and that the Demon possessing Reiji is there to fetch him and bring him back to Gehenna. Unable to understand and accept what the Demon told him, Shiro suddenly shows up while chanting biblical verses which exorcises the Demon. After that, numerous Demons started to appear then Shiro decided to immediately retreat to the church while explaining everything to Rin.

Manga & Anime Differences
- In the Manga, Rin was on his way to the job interview and then got attacked by the Demon, while in the Anime, Rin went to the supermarket and got fired.
- In the Manga he was supposed to work in a restaurant, while in the Anime it was the supermarket.
- The Anime opens by having various priests burst into blue flames, while in the Manga this never happens.
- In the Anime, Rin "confesses" the fight to Fujimoto, while in the Manga they discuss it over breakfast.
